How the check works

We open a TCP connection to your server and perform a Minecraft Server List Ping — the exact handshake the game client uses to populate the multiplayer list. The server replies with its current player count, version, MOTD and icon, and we time the round-trip for latency. If no port is given we first look up the _minecraft._tcp SRV record.

FAQ

How do I check if a Minecraft server is online?

Enter the server address (e.g. play.example.net) and click Check status. We ping the server live using the Minecraft Server List Ping protocol and show whether it is online, the player count, version, MOTD and latency.

Do I need to enter a port?

Usually no. Leave the port blank and we resolve the server’s SRV record automatically (the same way the Minecraft client does). Only enter a port if the server runs on a non-standard one and has no SRV record.

Why does it say my server is offline when it is running?

Common causes: the server isn’t finished starting, the wrong IP/port, a firewall blocking the port, server-ip set incorrectly in server.properties, or the host being offline. Online-mode and whitelist settings do not affect the ping itself.

A big server (like Hypixel) shows offline — is the tool broken?

No. The check runs from our edge network, and some large or DDoS-protected servers block automated connections from datacenter/Cloudflare IP ranges. They’ll show offline here even when up. Self-hosted and most community servers respond fine.

What is the MOTD?

The Message of the Day is the text shown under the server name in the multiplayer list. You can design yours with our MOTD generator.

Does this work for Bedrock servers?

This checker uses the Java Edition ping protocol. Bedrock uses a different (RakNet) protocol, so Bedrock-only servers won’t respond here.

How accurate is the latency?

Latency is measured from our edge network to the server, so it reflects the server’s responsiveness rather than your own connection. A low number means the server answered quickly.
